The history of quantum mechanics is often told as a series of isolated breakthroughs. Max Planck discovered that energy comes in discrete packets. Erwin Schrödinger later described matter using waves. But between them stood Niels Bohr, the physicist who carried the quantum from light into the atom.

This video explains how Bohr confronted a fundamental problem in classical physics: an orbiting electron should radiate energy, spiral into the nucleus, and cause the atom to collapse. Bohr’s radical solution was to propose that electrons can occupy only certain allowed energy levels.

When an electron jumps between those levels, it emits or absorbs light according to Planck’s equation. That insight connected quantized light with quantized matter and helped explain why atoms are stable and why they produce distinct spectral colors.

Schrödinger would later replace Bohr’s planetary-style electron orbits with wavefunctions, revealing why those discrete energy levels exist. Rather than overthrowing Bohr, Schrödinger completed the bridge Bohr had begun.
