But it also teaches you that people are far more complicated, funny, resilient, and loving than headlines make them seem. I've spent years in places like Afghanistan, Iraq, and Gaza. Even in places under terrible oppression, people still laugh. They still flirt. They still joke. They still find joy behind closed doors.
