Large data centers can place new demands on regional power systems, while growing dependence on AI makes cybersecurity failures increasingly relevant to patient safety. Meanwhile, wealthier health systems may gain access to sophisticated AI tools long before rural hospitals and safety-net facilities, potentially widening existing disparities if equitable access is not made a priority.
The goal should therefore not be to stop the expansion of AI, but to build its infrastructure responsibly. Cleaner energy, water-efficient cooling, stronger electrical grids, cybersecurity protections, transparent community planning, and equitable access to healthcare AI should all be part of the conversation. AI has the potential to improve medicine dramatically, but its success should ultimately be measured not only by how powerful the technology becomes, but by whether the infrastructure behind it strengthens public health rather than undermining it.
