With recipe, cooking and nutrition tips from Hayley and Kirsten.
Elly Hargreave is Captain and Co-founder of Pedal People, a small Brighton charity set up in 2017.Pedal People brings regular year-round outdoor “wind-in-hair adventures” to the elderly living in care homes, in the form of cycle rides around Brighton. They go to lots of places including parks, allotments and the seafront. The special Trikes, called ‘Trishaws’ enable the elder riders to sit up front and be piloted by volunteers. After rides, people report feeling ‘awake again’, ‘alive’, ‘happy’, ‘less anxious or depressed’ and ‘sleeping better’.
This year, Pedal People are expanding to offer accessible types of cycles to all ages and abilities. They are investing in wheelchair adaptable, side-by-side tandems, hand-cycles, tricycles, recumbents and standard cycles.
Elly set up the charity with Duncan Henderson, who managed to get the first specialist trike donated. She has previously led three charities, co-founded two and is a former trustee of Brighton Carers Centre. In total, Elly has 30 years experience in corporate, public and private sectors including as a BBC Broadcast Journalist and Human Rights Campaigns Manager at The Body Shop International.
