In this episode of The Unbroken with Sam Davis, Sam sits down with Marsha Stone for an honest conversation about one of the hardest questions a family can face:
How do I know if my son or daughter is struggling with addiction??
Marsha has spent years working in addiction treatment and recovery. She knew what addiction looked like. She helped other families recognize it and taught them how to set boundaries. And yet, when addiction showed up in her own home, she couldn’t see it.
Sam shares a similar experience and together they explore why addiction can be so difficult to recognize when it’s someone we love. They discuss family history, adverse childhood experiences, denial, secrecy, changing behavior, listening to what other family members are seeing, setting healthy boundaries, and why parents shouldn’t destroy themselves asking, “How did I not know sooner?”
Marsha also shares her remarkable journey from practicing law while struggling with alcoholism and addiction, to treatment and long-term recovery, to eventually building and leading treatment programs herself.
Most importantly, this conversation offers families something they desperately need: perspective. You don’t know what you don’t know, and sometimes the people closest to the situation are the last ones able to see it clearly.
