The fastest way to make football season harder is to buy everything before you know what the team actually requires. I’m Coach Mikki, and I’m breaking down the real-world youth football essentials I see every year, so you can stop guessing and start preparing. We talk through what most programs provide (helmet, shoulder pads, jerseys, pants) and what usually falls on parents, like properly fitting cleats, extra mouth guards, durable socks, and a water bottle that can keep up with the heat. If you’ve felt pressure to buy “all the new stuff,” this will help you separate needs from wants.

We also get honest about what happens after practice. Yes, soreness is normal, especially for a first-year player learning contact and conditioning, but there’s a line where “I’m sore” becomes “something is wrong.” I share what to watch for, why heat illness is serious, and why you should trust your instincts when your athlete doesn’t seem like themselves.

Then we move into the conversations that shape your player’s confidence. What should you say after a bad game? How do you support without interrogating? Should you coach your child at home, and how do you avoid giving conflicting instruction? I also give you practical, respectful ways to talk to a coach, including timing, tone, and what to do if a coach isn’t very approachable.
