Tuninter Flight 1153 ended in tragedy in 2005 when the aircraft ditched into the Mediterranean Sea after suffering a total loss of engine power mid-flight. What initially appeared to be a catastrophic mechanical failure was later traced to a critical maintenance error involving the installation of an incorrect fuel gauge designed for a different aircraft type.
Because of the faulty instrument, the crew believed the aircraft had sufficient fuel, delaying corrective action until it was too late. As both engines failed, the pilots attempted to reach the nearest airport, but increasing drag from unfeathered propellers and deteriorating flight conditions made the journey impossible.
Despite the severity of the situation, the captain managed to execute a controlled water landing that prevented the aircraft from breaking apart on impact, saving 23 lives. However, 16 passengers and crew were lost.
The investigation highlighted a chain of human and procedural failures, including inadequate cross-checking of maintenance work and insufficient operational training. In response, aviation authorities introduced stricter equipment compatibility rules and improved safety procedures to prevent similar mismatches in the future.
