概要

Born in the impoverished and vibrant Jewish East End of London, the Lipcott brothers rise above their circumstances to carve out their own paths in life and love. Driven by a deep commitment to uplift the working class, they devise The Scheme—a bold initiative aimed at benefiting both the residents of their old neighborhood and the Jewish community at large. The author passionately highlights the obligation of middle-class Jews to support their less fortunate counterparts. While this narrative from 1900 occasionally veers into preachy territory with its essentialist views on Jewish history and character, its far from one-dimensional. Readers will find engaging character studies, romantic entanglements, and delightful comedic moments throughout the tale. Samuel Gordon (1871-1927), the son of a Russian rabbi, was born in Germany and moved to England at 13. Like his protagonist Phil Lipcott, Gordon attended Cambridge University. The club envisioned by The Scheme draws inspiration from Londons Jewish Working Mens Institute, among other East End organizations founded by Jewish philanthropists at the turn of the 19th century, designed to instill the best qualities of the English character in the younger generation.
