概要

While this narrative from 1900 occasionally veers into preachy territory with its essentialist views on Jewish history and character, its far from one-dimensional. Readers will find engaging character studies, romantic entanglements, and delightful comedic moments throughout the tale. Samuel Gordon (1871-1927), the son of a Russian rabbi, was born in Germany and moved to England at 13. Like his protagonist Phil Lipcott, Gordon attended Cambridge University. The club envisioned by The Scheme draws inspiration from Londons Jewish Working Mens Institute, among other East End organizations founded by Jewish philanthropists at the turn of the 19th century, designed to instill the best qualities of the English character in the younger generation.
