What they thought was wrong:
They thought they needed better events, more engagement, stronger promotion, or another app to improve member participation and retention.
What everyone missed:
Members were not just deciding whether an event looked interesting. They were deciding whether they knew anyone, whether the room mattered, and whether the organization felt personally relevant to them.
What changed:
The work shifted from event promotion to connection design. Members could opt in, share interests, see relevant events, understand who else was attending, and get matched with people they should meet.
Why it matters:
Retention does not begin at renewal. It begins when a member starts to feel connected. More events will not fix weak belonging.
