Deep in the mountains of Korea, a fearsome and arrogant tiger believes himself to be the undisputed king of nature, feared by every animal and even the winds themselves. One evening, he prowls into a peaceful village and overhears a mother trying to quiet her crying daughter. To the tiger’s utter shock, the little girl remains completely unfazed when the mother warns her that a fox, a bear, or even the "big hungry tiger" might eat her. Confused and slightly insulted by this "courageous little brute" who shows him no respect, the tiger's arrogance turns to pure terror when the mother mentions a "dried persimmon" (pimmen) and the child instantly stops wailing. Convinced that a "dried persimmon" must be a monster far more terrifying than himself, the mighty tiger flees back to his mountain hideout to save his own life. This humorous tale teaches us that pride can make us imagine threats where none exist and that even the "greatest" can be humbled by a simple misunderstanding.
