Talk of an “economic recession” in Canada is back, but the picture is far from clear. Between near-stagnant GDP growth and a labour market that is still holding up, economists are divided over how to describe this phase: are we facing an actual recession, or simply an economic slowdown that does not fit the traditional definition?

The debate goes beyond numbers to the very concepts themselves, as the definition of a “technical recession” is no longer sufficient to understand a modern and complex economy. A striking paradox also emerges between weak growth and continued job creation, raising questions about the accuracy of traditional economic models.

At the same time, there is growing skepticism about how well GDP reflects the real living conditions of households, especially as cost-of-living pressures persist. Between the Bank of Canada’s cautious approach to policy decisions and the lack of clear economic direction, the key question remains: what does this phase actually mean for citizens in the coming months?
