What can CEOs learn from The Sopranos? Can you use Bridget Jones' Diary as a guide to career development? And what is Breaking Bad if not the ultimate manual for side hustlers?

Referencing hundreds of well-loved scenes, characters and plot lines in pop culture, the book pulls out key management, careers and leadership lessons that can be enjoyed and absorbed by everyone – from graduate trainees and CEOs, to pop culture enthusiasts and cinephiles.

Tackling themes ranging from emotional intelligence, teamwork dynamics, and climbing the corporate ladder to disrupting markets, crisis management, and toxic cultures, Rhymer Rigby offers a unique blend of entertainment and business wisdom.

Whether it's Patrick Bateman's personal branding in American Psycho, Mulder and Scully's working relationship in The X-Files, Hagrid’s induction process in Harry Potter, or the fundamental failures of risk management in the Alien franchise, The TV MBA casts an eye over celebrated characters and scenes, pulling out lessons and insights that apply to the real-world business environment.

This is a surprisingly informative book, full of lessons I didn't realize I'd spent the last few decades learning. Breaking Bad as a masterclass. The Shining as warning about the perils of remote working. The TV MBA has reframed entertainment in a way I didn't know was possible.
The TV MBA uses examples from TV programmes to highlight many management concepts. One can learn more about management from TV, theatre and entertainment than in some standard management book. What a joy to read, you’ll love it!
To use MBA-appropriate language, this book is a ‘true win-win’ – you learn a lot while having fun at the same time. No need to feel any guilt as you binge-watch some of these recommended TV series and films. This is research. This is knowledge work. Everything I know about management I have learned from Rhymer Rigby's viewing habits.
Finally, an MBA without the BS... In another writer's hands, this project might have come across as a cringe management fad. Instead, it contains more substance, insight and wisdom than most business books I've read. Rigby pulls this off thanks to both his deep understanding of business and the workplace, and also his natural feel for how pop culture can hit home harder than supposedly real-and-relatable corporate case studies.
Finally, a book for people who'd rather watch smart films to get a masterclass in how the corporate world really works. Strangely seductive and full of worldly wisdom, just like Tony Soprano.
Funny and thought-provoking lessons on management and the workplace from an excellent armchair guide. It's the only book you'll read that’ll make you want to kick back in front of Gone Girl for its salutary tale about remote working, and consider work–life balance tips from Dexter, the fictional forensic scientist who indulges his hobby as a serial killer outside office hours. I'm looking forward to rewatching Colonel Kurz's anticipation of his execution in Apocalypse Now through the prism of succession planning. The horror, the horror indeed.
