概要
My Year in Vietnam takes Phillip I. Elkins, a.k.a. Señor Felipe, from getting on the plane to Vietnam and the shock of arrival in Vietnam and seeing the cargo hold of the plane being loaded with GIs in caskets. From there he is assigned to his unit, at first in Saigon, where he meets some of the locals and gets involved with them. Then he’s sent up into the Central Highlands with the 1st Cavalry Division as a preventive medicine specialist under a Sergeant Sidell, who hates draftees, which of course, is what Elkins is. Sidell sends Elkins, and other draftees, out into some dangerous situations. After several months of that, the unit breaks up, and Elkins is sent back to Saigon and gets involved with some interesting and fun relationships with the locals. He goes to Bangkok for R&R and has such a great time that he goes back to Bangkok a second time. Then he’s reassigned out of Saigon and luckily survives a plane crashing into his unit. He’s been counting down the days of his time left in Vietnam when his commanding officer asks him to extend his yearlong tour of duty in Vietnam.
