概要

NOW A MAJOR FILM STARRING RACHEL WEISZ AND SAM CLAFIN

'I threw the piece of paper on the fire. She saw it burn . . . '

Orphaned at an early age, Philip Ashley is raised by his benevolent cousin, Ambrose. Resolutely single, Ambrose delights in making Philip his heir, knowing he will treasure his beautiful Cornish estate. But Philip's world is shattered when Ambrose sets off on a trip to Florence. There he falls in love and marries. Then he suddenly dies in suspicious circumstances.

In almost no time at all, the new widow—Philip's cousin Rachel—turns up in England. Despite himself, Philip is drawn to this beautiful, sophisticated, mysterious woman like a moth to the flame. And yet . . . might she have had a hand in Ambrose's death?

My Cousin Rachel is a quietly unsettling novel that builds its power through ambiguity rather than plot twists. I admired Daphne du Maurier’s restraint and her refusal to give the reader certainty—Rachel remains an enigma to the very end, which is both the book’s greatest strength and its lingering discomfort. At the same time, the novel is a slow burn, and at times the deliberate pacing tested my patience, especially in the long stretches spent inside Philip’s obsessive and often frustrating inner world. Still, the psychological tension pays off in an ending that forces the reader to question not Rachel’s guilt, but Philip’s judgment, silence, and complicity. It’s a novel that rewards reflection more than momentum, and one that stays with you precisely because it never settles into a single truth.
