William Durant, a charismatic salesman of the late 19th century, launched a cart-building business after experiencing an unusually comfortable ride one day. By age 40 he had become a millionaire, unsure how to spend the rest of his life. When retired plumber David Buick and a group of friends from his hometown of Flint, Michigan, approached him, Durant had ridden in an automobile only twice. The company he went on to create—General Motors—essentially invented the modern American corporation, and in the process Durant made and lost three separate fortunes.
His story underscores the uneasy relationship between inventors and those who control the capital needed to commercialize their inventions.
