Lissa Muscatine
By the time Lissa Muscatine arrived at the Clinton White House in 1993, transformation was already underway. After twelve years of Republican administrations, Clinton’s ascension felt like the arrival of a new dawn in American politics. But Clinton was hardly the only changemaker; his wife, Hillary, represented something equally powerful: a public figure balancing family life and professional ambition, during a time of outdated gender norms. Pilloried in the press for her career, her marriage, and even her hair, Hillary stared down her critics. When she arrived at the White House, the role of First Lady was still largely ceremonial, carrying no job description let alone legislative influence. Hillary intended to change that.
In the White House, Hillary assembled a vibrant, diverse, and first of its kind group of women – and a few men – to serve as her closest advisors. Nicknamed Hillaryland, the staff, which soon included Muscatine as the First Lady’s speechwriter – itself a new position – pushed forward an ambitious agenda focused on women, children, and families. Muscatine faced an uphill battle, as Republican lawmakers and right-wing media put the administration under a microscope. As she worked to communicate Hillary’s priorities to a public still unsure how to interpret such an active political partner, the job revealed how much it took for any woman in politics to define her own narrative. But Hillary, surrounded by Hillaryland, continued to fight for her causes – even in the face of relentless investigations, political attacks, and cultural backlash. When her efforts on healthcare legislation failed, she and Hillaryland made a pivot – taking off across the world to champion the rights of women. Together, their efforts redefined the possibilities of the First Lady’s role across the world, and helped lay the groundwork for her subsequent roles as US senator, Secretary of State, and the first woman to secure the presidential nomination from a major American political party.
Hillaryland is Muscatine’s riveting account of these pivotal years, and of the women who were much more than a staff, but a sisterhood. Drawing on more than 200 interviews with Hillary’s colleagues, friends, and Hillary herself, Muscatine brings to life the fast-paced days in the West Wing, the late nights writing speeches on Air Force One, and the small but significant moments in between, spent in the company of a group of intelligent, likeminded, formidable women. Hillaryland is much more than political history, but a testament to a group of women whose solidarity expanded the boundaries of power.
