- As a child in Brooklyn Roach played drums in gospel bands, marched in parades, and performed at Georgie Jay's Taproom, earning attention and early gigs.
- At 18 he substituted for Sonny Greer with the Duke Ellington Orchestra at the Paramount Theater the same night he was called, holding the large band together.
- By 19 he recorded professionally with Coleman Hawkins, entering the recording world far earlier than most peers.
- At 21 Roach and Kenny Clarke shifted the steady beat from the bass drum to the ride cymbal in a 1945 Savoy session, redefining the drummer’s role.
- Rather than consolidate, Roach studied with Haitian master Ti Roro and later earned a Bachelor of Music in classical percussion at the Manhattan School of Music.
