In this episode of The Entrepreneur to Author Podcast, your host Scott MacMillan speaks with Saul Brown, Adjunct Associate Professor and Program Director of the Emerging Leader Program at AGSM, UNSW Business School, founder of Saul Brown Leadership, and author of Learning Leadership: The Science of Lighting Fires in Self and Others. Saul shares how his path through surf lifesaving, financial markets, startups, telcos, and leadership development shaped his views on motivation, trust, and helping technical experts become effective people leaders.

Saul explains the central ideas in Learning Leadership, including the difference between being “the fire” and becoming the “ignition” that lights fires in others. He walks through his five-D framework: direction, do, dump, delegate, and develop, and explores why delegation is so difficult for experts whose identity is tied to technical work. He also reflects on turning 20 years of teaching into a book and offers advice for aspiring expert authors: capture what you already teach, and write for a specific person you want to help.
