- As Minister of Finance, she delivered a "bombshell speech" to the Liberian Chamber of Commerce, accusing corporations of hoarding profits.
- Following the 1980 coup where President William Tolbert and cabinet members were executed, Sirleaf accepted a post as president of the Liberian Bank for Development and Investment under the new regime.
