In this Daily Devotion for August 27, 2026, Pastor David Balla walks through Psalm 78:37-39, where after chapter after chapter of unfaithfulness, God's compassion breaks through anyway. Their hearts were not steadfast, yet He restrained His wrath, remembering that they were but flesh, fragile and fleeting.

This devotion traces that mercy to its complete fulfillment in Jesus, God's compassion made flesh, restraining wrath by absorbing it Himself on the cross instead of simply holding it back. Every time God withheld judgment in the wilderness, He was preparing the way for the day His own Son would carry that judgment fully, once and for all. There we find true grace, forgiveness, and salvation, secured through His finished work rather than our unsteady hearts. Through His redemption we are welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven, and in the Lord's Supper that same atonement comes to us again, His true body and blood given for the forgiveness of sins.

When you feel the weight of your own unsteady heart, remember this compassion. He knows you are but flesh, and in Jesus, He has already atoned for everything that flesh has ever done.
