What happens when “us vs. them” thinking becomes the way we see the world?

In this Weekly Dispatch, we explore othering, the process of seeing another person or group as fundamentally separate from ourselves, and the profound effect it can have on empathy, relationships, and community.

We explore the historical roots of othering and how the pattern continues to influence our lives today. The conversation moves from the history of social division to something much more personal: what happens when political and cultural differences begin to affect friendships, families, and our ability to recognize one another's shared humanity?

We also explore an important question: Can we disagree with someone without turning them into “the other”?

Together, we talk about:

  • What othering means and how the “us vs. them” mentality develops
  • How othering can diminish empathy and compassion
  • The relationship between polarization and community
  • Why discomfort can sometimes lead to judgment instead of connection
  • Finding common ground with people who see the world differently
  • Rebuilding community through shared experiences and action
  • Small ways we can practice empathy without giving up our own boundaries or beliefs

For a death-positive community, these questions carry particular weight. Death, grief, caregiving, and loss have a peculiar way of reminding us that beneath our identities and disagreements, we are all vulnerable human beings navigating the same fundamental experiences of connection, separation, love, and loss.

This isn't a conversation about pretending our differences don't matter. It's about asking what becomes possible when difference doesn't have to mean disconnection.
