Long form vs short form: what actually counts as whatThe definitions keep shifting (TikTok now allows five minute videos, and some podcasts run to seven hours), but for business owners it's simple: long form is anything over ninety seconds, landscape, in-depth and value-heavy, the kind of thing people sit down to watch over lunch. Short form is under sixty to ninety seconds, vertical, and delivers one snippet of value, one mindset shift or one moment of entertainment. And a word of warning: recording a thirty second video in landscape isn't long form, it's just short form done wrong.2. Start with short form, no questionShort form is the easiest on-ramp: it gets you confident on camera, into the rhythm of hooks and stories, and gives you quick data on what topics land. Long form has a much meatier ingredients list (stories, credibility, statistics, structure) plus an arduous editing process, and it's a long game with slow early views. Short form gets you views, comments and motivation quickly, works across Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube Shorts at once, and your best performing shorts tell you exactly which topics deserve the long form treatment later.3. The maths: eight long forms a day vs thirty shorts an hourLyndsay's record is seven or eight fifteen-minute long forms in a full eight hour day, roughly an hour per video with all the stop-starts. With shorts, ten to twenty in an hour is realistic, and up to thirty if someone's feeding you hooks. In our first Batch It Crazy session inside Vidinary, members recorded around 230 videos in ninety minutes, with one person doing twenty two by reusing the same hooks across different services. The secret is separating the thinking (writing hooks and prompts in advance) from the doing (sitting down and recording).4. It's not the hook, it's the emotion behind the hookThe best hook in the world falls flat if you deliver it flat: "you would not believe what happened today" said in a monotone does nothing, but paired with genuine energy (and maybe a dramatic lift of the glasses) it feels like your best friend about to share juicy gossip. It's a bit of acting, and yes it feels silly, but nobody's watching you record. As Lyndsay put it: it's not what you said, it's how you said it. Sound familiar?5. Short form wins the ROI battle (which surprised us too)A HubSpot study of around a thousand marketers found short form video delivers the best ROI of any format, which genuinely shocked us; we'd always assumed long form would win. Twelve months ago we might have advised differently, and long form still creates better customers for high ticket offers (five to ten hours of watch time builds serious trust, and a book does the same job). But Lyndsay has bought from £300-an-hour coaches purely off their shorts, so no, you won't fail without long form. Both is best; short form first.6. Purposeful shorts beat clipped-up long formYes, you can clip a podcast or interview into shorts (we do it with this very show), but across our clients, shorts recorded purposefully as shorts massively outperform clipped content, because they're built around the hook and the emotion from second one. Finding the genuinely good moments in a long-form video is a skill: our internal agency document on it runs about fifteen pages, and most AI clipping tools still start clips in places that make no sense.7. Breaking news: clipping just went live in VidonaryMid-recording, Martin got the notification from our developers: clipping is now officially in Vidinary, built off the back of years of manual trial and error finding the best moments for clients. We refused to ship "any old crap clip" tool, which is why it took so long. It's free for everyone on the business tier and above, and it's Lyndsay's Friday night sorted (her, the puppy, and a clipping tool).8. Make your shorts shorterThe biggest short form mistake: padding a seven second point out to 59.999 seconds because "it's got to be full of value". It's like a comedian explaining the punchline after delivering it; the moment the value lands and the question is answered, stop. A seven second short that nails the point beats a stretched sixty second one every time.Hook of the day: "Here's the only video you need to watch if you want to [goal]"Here's the only video you need to watch if you want a million views on your next video, or to turn long form into short form clips. It works because "the only video" cuts through the overwhelm of a thousand competing tutorials. And remember today's lesson: bring the energy, test emphasising different words, and embrace feeling silly. People love...
