The beacon traced directly to Fair Margin, yet the boat was later found underway and her owner alive - so where had the safety device been while the crew drifted and searched in the dark?
In this episode, we tell the story of Amy Young and her Catalina 42 Fair Margin, the night Tom Bricker went overboard, and the chain of interrupted tasks and hidden failures that left a competent sailor invisible to the systems meant to find her without spoiling how she was ultimately located.

- Donna Peterson found the EPIRB dry and unactivated behind a propane cage on July 19 2011.
- Tom Bricker removed the EPIRB two days before departure to replace a sticker and left it on a workbench.
- A dockhand moved the beacon outside to clear bench space and it remained in the dirt for at least a week.
- Amy transmitted nine seconds of VHF at 2:23 a.m. reporting a man overboard but the radio could not reliably transmit.
- Tom Bricker’s body was recovered twelve miles north of the man-overboard position on July 22 and the reason he went overboard remains unknown.
