- At 11:47 AM an empty 14-foot aluminum johnboat was found at the end of Minnow Point public dock with its motor still running.
- A red-and-black Stanley thermos was standing perfectly upright in the boat’s forward compartment and was photographed before being touched.
- Detective Terry Stevens tested an identical thermos in similar chop six times; it fell within 90 seconds each time.
- A mechanic estimated the outboard had run between 2 and 3 miles based on remaining fuel, less than the 4-6 mile round trip to Richard’s usual fishing spot.
- Neighbor Paul Eckert last saw Richard load a cooler into his Dodge Ram around 5:20 AM; gas station attendant Bobby Pruett saw him fill the same thermos about 7:15 AM with a heavyset man nearby.
