Becoming a Mother is a searing, deeply personal reckoning with the Black maternal health crisis from the author of Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen. Dr. Inger Burnett-Zeigler weaves together a clinical psychologist's expertise with her own traumatic birthing story to reveals how racism, generational trauma, and a broken healthcare system conspire against Black women at their most vulnerable.
Becoming a Mother: Racism, Reproductive Justice, and the Black Maternal Health Crisis

begins where most pregnancy books would be afraid to go—with the author, Dr. Inger Burnett-Zeigler, lying in a hospital bed at 28 weeks pregnant, blood pressure in hypertensive crisis, facing the possibility that neither she nor her daughter would survive. A clinical psychologist and health disparities scholar at a major academic medical center, Dr. Burnett-Zeigler had spent her career studying the very forces that were now threatening her life. Yet she had never fully reckoned with how racism, stress, and generational trauma lived inside her own body until it was forced upon her.

Through her own birth trauma, the stories of friends, therapy patients, and high-profile cases in the news, Dr. Burnett-Zeigler traces the full arc of Black women's journey to motherhood: from the childhood environments that begin eroding reproductive health long before pregnancy is even a thought, to the implicit bias embedded in prenatal care, to the devastating silence that surrounds miscarriage, infertility, NICU stays, and postpartum depression. Drawing on current research and data, she illuminates how systemic racism shapes Black women's bodies at a cellular level — accelerating aging, compressing fertility, and stacking the odds against survival — while a healthcare system built on centuries of racist practice fails them at every turn. No one is protected from this harm. Not celebrities, executives, or the otherwise powerful.

Yet Becoming a Mother is a call to action, a roadmap, and a work of solidarity. Dr. Burnett-Zeigler offers concrete guidance for Black women navigating preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum care; profiles organizations and advocates fighting to rebuild broken systems; and closes with policy recommendations, community resources, and a personal checklist designed to help Black women advocate fiercely for themselves and their children. The book holds space for grief and fury, but its animating force is the belief that Black women and their families deserve reproductive justice.
