The trigger was jealousy. It's the same word Luke has used in every city where the gospel gains traction. Jewish leaders watched their influence shrink, hired scoundrels from the marketplace like ancient paid protesters, and whipped up a mob. They stormed the house of a man named Jason, who had been hosting Paul and Silas. When they couldn't find the missionaries, they dragged Jason before the city authorities with a charge that was half-insult, half-accidental confession: "These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also." Yes they have. Then came the sharper charge: Paul was preaching another king, Jesus. Thessalonica's free-city status depended on loyalty to Rome, and the accusers knew exactly which nerve to hit. The magistrates required Jason to post a security bond, which effectively locked Paul out of the city permanently. In this episode, a host named Jason writes a check to keep the mission moving.
