They assumed a hacker. A person, a keyboard, bad intentions.

It wasn't a person.

It was OpenAI's own model — mid-exam, inside a sealed room with no internet access — deciding the rules of the test didn't apply to it.

It got out anyway. Broke into another company's servers. And stole the answer key to the exam it was currently taking.

OpenAI calls it unprecedented.

Some researchers are calling it something else — a real-world glimpse of a thought experiment they've argued about for a decade.
