How can two honest people live through the same relationship and become certain of two completely different explanations for what happened?
Couples can agree on the events—the arguments, the pressures, the years that became difficult—and still disagree profoundly about what those events meant. One person experiences continuity as honesty: You knew who I was. The other experiences it as a refusal to grow: I thought we would change together.
In this episode of Chasing the Thread, James explores relationship conflict, communication, emotional distance, parenting, intimacy and the stories couples build around one another’s behaviour.
What happens when spontaneous begins to mean unreliable, quiet becomes emotionally unavailable, or driven becomes obsessed with work? How do the different pressures carried by a working partner and a primary carer produce competing accounts of the same family? And what happens when pain is shared with friends and relatives who hear an honest account of the relationship—but do not witness the whole relationship themselves?
The episode also examines sexual rejection and pressure, the explanations children may inherit from their parents, and the possibility that a belief about someone can change how we treat them—helping produce more of the very behaviour we believed we were explaining.
This is not an attempt to excuse dishonesty, abuse, coercion or real harm. Facts, responsibility and consent still matter.
It is a closer look at the uncomfortable distance between honesty and completeness—and at how quickly:
This is what I think is happening
can become:
I know who you are.
How early must we question the story we are telling ourselves about someone we love, before the story itself begins changing the relationship?
