After Absalom's death, King David is overwhelmed with grief, causing the nation's victory to be overshadowed by mourning. Joab rebukes David, reminding him that his excessive sorrow discourages the soldiers who had risked their lives to save him and the kingdom. David accepts Joab's counsel and publicly appears before the people, restoring their confidence and morale.

As David prepares to return to Jerusalem, the tribes of Israel debate bringing the king back, while the men of Judah take the lead in welcoming him home. David seeks to unite the kingdom by extending mercy and reconciliation. He promises Amasa the position of commander in place of Joab, hoping to strengthen his relationship with Judah.

During the journey, several individuals meet David. Shimei, who had previously cursed David, comes in repentance and asks for forgiveness. Although Abishai urges David to execute him, David chooses mercy and spares his life. Mephibosheth also appears, explaining that he had remained loyal to David and had been deceived by his servant Ziba. David restores part of Mephibosheth's inheritance, though the full truth remains uncertain. Barzillai, who had generously cared for David during his exile, declines the king's invitation to live in Jerusalem because of his advanced age, asking instead that his servant Chimham receive the honor. David gratefully agrees.

The chapter concludes with renewed tension between the tribes of Judah and Israel over who has the greater claim to David, revealing that although Absalom's rebellion has ended, division within the nation still exists and will soon lead to another crisis.
