Long before C-3PO or Roomba, a 12th-century engineer in the court of the Artuqid sultan designed mechanical servants that could pour wine, play music, and wash hands. This is the story of Badi' al-Zaman Abu al-'Izz ibn Isma'il ibn al-Razzaz al-Jazari, whose 1206 Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices described over fifty automata, including the iconic Elephant Clock, a water-powered marvel that blended Greek hydraulics, Indian elephant symbolism, Chinese dragons, and Islamic craftsmanship.
