After moving in with relatives following high school, a young man settled into a quiet routine in a house tucked back from the road beside an endless cornfield. Nothing about the place seemed unusual—until the footsteps started.

Late at night, after everyone else had gone to bed, he began hearing someone slowly descend the stairs and cross the floor above him. The sounds were unmistakable. Each time he rushed upstairs expecting to find one of the kids awake, he found an empty house instead.
