A name can carry faith, family, region, memory, aspiration, love, and the dreams parents quietly place in their child’s future. Believe it or not, Ram and Lakshmi are among India’s all-time favourite names since Independence. But why? Why did names like Rahul, Anil, Sunil, Pooja, and Rohit rise, return and remain across decades? And what do these names reveal about India’s journey and the hopes, emotions, and imagination of Indians through time? That’s exactly what Vivek Desai, entrepreneur, and co-founder of iMeUsWe, and his team set out to discover sifting through 1.6 billion public records to trace Indian name trends from 1947 to 2025, decade by decade.
