概要

 I got the job through a man I barely knew, a retired signals officer who said the posting was 'quiet' and 'good for someone who wants to be left alone.' Station 7K sits at the end of a gravel road in a valley where the mist doesn't burn off until noon. My first shift was in early November. The previous operator had been gone for three weeks. His jacket was still hanging on the back of the door. The shortwave set was warm when I touched it, as if someone had been listening just before I arrived. I thought it was a fault in the tube circuitry. I thought a lot of things that first day. By sunset, I had stopped thinking and started listening. By midnight, I understood that the station had been waiting for me. Not for a replacement. For a witness.
