 Law enforcement officials in New Jersey recently utilized innovative genetic genealogy to identify Francis T. Schooley as the primary suspect in the 1993 and 1994 murders of Marebeth Welsh and Jennifer Persia. Although the perpetrator died by suicide in 2000, investigators successfully linked the two cold cases by matching biological evidence recovered from both crime scenes to his living relatives. The victims, a young mother and a high school student, were both killed in the Camden County area over thirty years ago. This breakthrough was made possible by a specialized Homicide Cold Case Unit that re-examined decades-old DNA using modern forensic databases. While the suspect can no longer face trial, the announcement provides a sense of closure and long-awaited answers for the grieving families. These findings highlight how advancements in science can eventually resolve even the most stagnant criminal investigations to honor the memory of the victims.
