概要

Forgiveness:

What Is Forgiveness?

Biblical forgiveness means choosing to release someone from the debt of their wrongdoing—just as God releases us.

  • Key verse: Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

👉 Forgiveness is not:

  • Saying the hurt didn’t matter
  • Trusting someone immediately again
  • Excusing wrong behavior

👉 It is:

  • Letting go of resentment
  • Choosing obedience to God
  • Reflecting God’s mercy

God’s Forgiveness Toward Us:

Before we can forgive others, we need to understand how deeply God forgives us.

  • 1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us…”
  • Psalm 103:12 “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”

👉 Takeaway: God’s forgiveness is complete, not partial.

Jesus’ Teaching on Forgiveness:

The Standard: Unlimited Forgiveness

  • Matthew 18:21–22 Peter asks how many times to forgive. Jesus responds: “seventy-seven times.”

👉 Meaning: Forgiveness isn’t about keeping score.

The Warning: Unforgiveness Has Consequences

  • Matthew 6:14–15 “If you do not forgive others… your Father will not forgive your sins.”

👉 Unforgiveness blocks spiritual growth and relationship with God.

The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant

  • Matthew 18:23–35

A servant forgiven a massive debt refuses to forgive a small one.

👉 Lesson:

  • We’ve been forgiven far more than we’re asked to forgive
  • Refusing to forgive contradicts God’s grace

Jesus’ Example on the Cross

  • Luke 23:34 “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

👉 Even in suffering, Jesus chose forgiveness.

Why Forgiveness Matters:

Spiritually

  • Restores relationship with God
  • Reflects Christ’s character

Emotionally

  • Frees you from bitterness
  • Brings peace and healing
  • Hebrews 12:15 warns about a “root of bitterness” that can grow

How to Practice Forgiveness:

Step 1: Acknowledge the hurt

Don’t minimize it—be honest with God.

Step 2: Choose to forgive

Forgiveness is a decision, not just a feeling.

Step 3: Pray for the person

  • Matthew 5:44 “Pray for those who persecute you.”

Step 4: Release the offense

Let go of the desire for revenge.

Step 5: Repeat as needed

Sometimes forgiveness is a process.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Is there someone I need to forgive right now?
  2. What am I holding onto—anger, pain, pride?
  3. How has God forgiven me in similar or greater ways?
  4. What step can I take today toward forgiveness?

🙏 Closing Prayer

Lord, thank You for forgiving me completely. Help me to forgive others the same way. Heal my heart from any bitterness and give me the strength to let go. Teach me to love like You do. In Jesus Name. Amen.
