आसीत् पुरा इक्ष्वाकुकुले पुरञ्जयनामकः त्रैलोक्ये प्रसिद्धः कश्चन महायोधः । कदाचित् देवानाम् असुराणां च मिथः सङ्घर्षे जाते देवेन्द्रः पुरञ्जयं साहाय्यम् अयाचत । 'यदि भवान् वृषभरूपेण मम वाहनं भवेत् तर्हि मया साहाय्यं दीयते' इति अवदत् पुरञ्जयः । वृषभत्वस्य अङ्गीकारः अपमानकरः इति चिन्तितवते इन्द्राय विष्णुः 'चिन्तां विना लोकहिताय वृषभरूपेण पुरञ्जयस्य वाहनं भवतु भवान्' इत्यवदत् । भगवतः वचनानि श्रुत्वा सः पुरञ्जयस्य वृषभवाहनं भूत्वा युद्धाय सन्नद्धः जातः । युद्धे वृषभस्य ककुदि एव उपविश्य असुराः पराजिताः पुरञ्जयेन । तस्मात् कारणात् तस्य नाम 'काकुत्स्थः' इति प्रसिद्धम् अभवत् । तस्य वंशः अपि काकुस्थवंशः इति ख्यातिम् अवाप्नोत् । लोककल्याणाय कृतं कार्यं कदापि लघु न स्यात् ।

Long ago, in the Ikshvaku dynasty, there was a great warrior named Puranjaya, renowned throughout the three worlds. Once, when a battle arose between the gods and the demons, Indra sought Puranjaya’s help. Puranjaya agreed, saying: “I will assist only if I fight seated upon you in the form of a bull”. Indra felt this humiliating, but Vishnu advised him: “For the welfare of the world, become Puranjaya’s bull-mount without hesitation”. Indra accepted, and Puranjaya fought seated upon the bull’s hump, defeating the demons. From then on, he became famous as Kākutstha (“he who sat upon the hump”), and his lineage was known as the Kākutstha dynasty.
