Reflection: Shifting the Question
“Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.”
— Matthew 5:42
Jesus does more than adjust our behavior.
He challenges our mindset.
So often, we place ourselves in the judgment seat.
We quietly evaluate:
Are they responsible?
Are they deserving?
Will this inconvenience me?
We decide who is worthy of our care and who is not.
But Jesus shifts the question.
Instead of asking, Who deserves my help?
we begin asking, How can I help?
This does not mean abandoning wisdom.
It does not mean ignoring boundaries.
It means loosening our grip on control.
It means assuming generosity before suspicion.
It means choosing openness over indifference.
We may not be able to meet every request.
We cannot solve every need.
But we can cultivate a posture that is ready to respond.
A heart that is not closed.
A life that leans toward mercy.
When we shift the question,
we do more than change our behavior.
We become the kind of people
through whom generosity flows.
And that is how the kingdom takes shape among us.
