The term was popularized back in 1988 by Peggy McIntosh, a professor at Wellesley College. In her groundbreaking essay, she identified 46 different ways that white individuals benefit from unearned advantages in their everyday lives. This was a striking revelation, shedding light on the often invisible privileges that accompany being white in Western societies. Before McIntosh, voices like W.E.B. Du Bois introduced ideas about racial superiority as early as the 1930s, describing what he called a "psychological wage" for white workers. This notion hinted at a deeper understanding of how race and class intersect, setting the stage for future discussions.
