概要
'Vanity is the soil that rulers spring from, as the mushrooms spring from the rich loam of our dark caverns.'
First published in 1896, Ingersoll Lockwood's dystopian masterpiece 1900; or, The Last President remains eerily relevant in the twenty-first century.
The year is 1896 and the nation is in turmoil. After a shocking election – in which political order is upended as an outsider is chosen to be the next president – New York is thrown into chaos. Mobs of protestors swarm the streets, the economy shakes and whispers of various conspiracies echo through the blocks of the city. As the new president, Mr. Bryan, takes office, powerful, unseen forces begin to sinisterly shape America's future. Uncannily prophetic to today's political climate, Lockwood's gripping dystopian is a masterclass in suspense, intrigue and provocation. Fast-paced and an unnerving portrayal of misplaced power, 1900; or The Last President is a chilling reminder of how quickly fear can unravel a republic.
Ingersoll Lockwood (1841 – 1918) was an American writer and lawyer. A prolific author, he penned several children's books, novels, poetry, political essays and other non-fiction – sometimes under the pseudonym Irwin Longman. His work spanned many genres, including dystopian fiction, sci-fi and fantasy.
