A Prayer for Hearts That Build

As we honor the life and witness of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we ask God to form our hearts in love, courage, and justice, that we may help build the peaceful and faithful world to which God calls us.

God of peace,

You have called us to build a better world,

but not with the tools of anger, fear, or hatred.

Search our hearts.

Remove what hardens us toward our neighbors—

even the ones we struggle to love.

Teach us to build with love:

love that is patient,

love that is courageous,

love that seeks justice without surrendering compassion.

When evil presses in—

from outside us or within us—

give us the strength to overcome it with good.

Make us instruments of the peace we long to see.

And let the world we build reflect the love you have first shown us.

Amen.
