सरयूनद्याः उत्तरभागः गङ्गोली इति नाम्ना ख्यातः । दक्षिणभागश्च कुमू इति नाम्ना प्रसिद्धः । गङ्गोलीक्षेत्रवासिनः अतीव चतुराः कुमूक्षेत्रस्य जनाः सरलाः विनीताश्च भवन्ति । कदाचित् सरयूनद्याः तटे द्वयोः क्षेत्रयोः वृषभौ सम्मिलितौ । परिचयानन्तरं तयोः स्पर्धा प्रवृता यत् कः वृषभः सरयूनद्याः जलम् अधिकं पातुं समर्थः इति । कुमूक्षेत्रस्य वृषभस्तु जलं पीत्वा पीत्वा किञ्चित्कालानन्तरम् अचेतनत्वं गतः । गङ्गोलीकक्षेत्रस्य वृषभः चतुरः आसीत् । सः जलं न अपिबत् । केवलं जलधारायां मुखं कृत्वा पानमुद्रायाम् अतिष्ठत् । सहसा तयोः रक्षकौ आगत्य तौ नीतवन्तौ ।

On the northern bank of the Sarayu River lies Gangoli, and on the southern bank lies Kumoo. The people of Gangoli are known for their cleverness, while those of Kumoo are simple and humble. Once, two bulls from these regions met at the riverbank. They began a contest to see which bull could drink more water from the Sarayu. The bull from Kumoo drank continuously until he collapsed unconscious. The bull from Gangoli, being clever, did not drink at all—he merely placed his mouth in the stream and pretended to drink. Soon, the keepers of the bulls arrived and took them away.
