I ---- December 14: Identity Gift N --- December 21: Now and Not Yet! G --- December 28: Go Now! MIRACLE– For God so . . . loved – that He gave His One and Only Son!! But after he (Joseph) had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.” -Matthew 1:20 MILLIEU - The context surrounding the birth, life, and ministry of Jesus was characterized by spiritual, religious, political, and cultural dynamics. Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. -Matthew 4:1 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zubulun and Naphtali—to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah . . . -Matthew 4:12-14 MESSAGE – The message of Christmas (and Christianity) is the Good News that the Messiah, the Savior, the King has been born! She (Mary) will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. -Matthew 1:21 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” -Matthew 4:17 METHOD – The method of the expansion of God’s Kingdom on earth is not dependent on military or political expressions of power. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. -Matthew 4:23 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” -Matthew 4:15-16 The message of the Kingdom of Heaven is to be “lived out through” and “shared by” disciples of Jesus! The power and authority Jesus displayed was neither militaristic nor political. But his authority and power were staggering nonetheless. Jesus was powerful enough to conquer the devilish ruler of this world, universal enough to include both Jews and Gentiles in his messianic gospel, authoritative enough to transform simple men into leaders of a movement that has changed the course of history, and effective enough to attend to the basic needs of the people—body, soul, and spirit. This is the kind of messianic deliverer that advances the kingdom of God. -Michael J. Wilkins, Matthew MEANING – The Kingdom of Heaven has a dual dynamic that creates a real tension that has existed since its inception. There is a “now—and not yet” dynamic at work. Inaugurated Eschatology is the theological phrase that captures this truth. All is Well????
