あらすじ・解説
A dangerous offer. A terrible choice. What would it take to make you a killer?
This is my offer: all you have to do is give me one name. And I will make that person disappear.
When Sarah Haywood rescues a young girl in trouble, she expects nothing in return. But her instinctive act of bravery puts her in the debt of a powerful and dangerous man, and he has other ideas. He lives by his own brutal code, and all debts must be repaid - in the only way he knows how.
He offers Sarah a way to solve an impossible situation with her intolerable boss. A once-in-a-lifetime deal that could turn her life around and make all her problems disappear. No consequences. No comeback. No chance of being found out. All it takes is a 29 second phone call...because everyone has a name to give. Don't they?

Two dimensional characters in a terrible plot
What a tedious book! It’s supposed to be a thriller, but drags on and on. There is no subtlety- every point is hammered home and all conversions are stilted and repetitive. People in this book seem incapable of expressing concern beyond repeated ‘are you ok’? I could not get to grips with Sarah’s character, I emphasised but she also really frustrated me. The plot was so das fetched that I got bored rather than excited by the twist. ***spoiler alert seriously, a baddie with a big scar, is this a children’s book of clichees? An a powerful yet incompetent mobster? I gave up with about 3 hours to go.
The narrator overemphasised too many words in every sentence, which also got on my nerves.
Disappointing!

A Logan Berry Smoothie?
When I read T.M. Logan's first novel on Audible, LIES, I enjoyed it but thought it a bit mechanical and bordering on being a by the numbers style of thriller. Perhaps oddly given its name 29 seconds is something different, smoother and more organic in its development. I liked the characters, it fed into current trends about the nature of crime in Europe and it had an ending I particularly enjoyed. It kind of jolted but definitely kept me guessing. Neatly done.
Like most thrillers it does lean on its readers buying into certain things, the key points here being whether you believe in the mysterious powerful figure and his motivations and indeed the predatory Professor Lovelock, who is Sarah's boss. If you buy into these and the deal that is offered then the rest should be enjoyable, if you don't then you're unlikely to change your mind later on.
The narration by Jane Slavin is fine and well-suited to the book though Sarah's closest work colleague seemed to slip in and out of accent from time to time. A minor criticism for a very decent performance.
There are some tough scenes and subjects covered within. Much like Sarah Vaughan's excellent Anatomy of a Scandal this book delves into misogyny in elite academia and the nature of the seedy old boys networks within that social strata. Lovelock is hard reading for us men in some ways but we can't pretend such predators don't exist just as we know we aren't all cut from that same soiled cloth.
Very enjoyable overall and for me at least a genuine improvement on the story in the author's previous book.

Slow, Drawn Out and Repetitive
This was so long and drawn out. I stuck with it but the story did not pick up until the last 15 minutes. I felt that a lot of the writing was just words that were repeated over and over again to fill up space.

I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone
Possible spoiler!
I think the book would have been more interesting if the Russian mafia man had done what he said that he would do.
Sarah, was a weak woman, I just wanted to give her a slap.
The bathroom part, well I thought oh finally something is gonna happen here! then nothing... it jumps to where she is sat at her desk and it's all over. it's like when JR came back to life and it was all a dream. Really, this is lazy writing.

Banal
I gave up about a third of the way through due to the excruciatingly boring descriptions of family life.
I can't bear the kind of book that takes a female protagonist and puts the major emphasis on the importance of her offspring. A little is needed for context of the character but a detailed description of breakfast and "the school run" and various other child related chores is unnecessary. The result was to totally stilt the plot.
This might have been an interesting storyline, was it not swamped in boring dross.

Poor
Unlikeable characters, plot and ending! Do not waste a credit on this book. Hard to believe it’s from the same author as “The Catch”

A good twisty thriller
I really enjoyed this book. Lots of twists and turns. I really enjoyed the narrator. She was great to listen to. Some books I have to turn off because of the narrator but she was very good. The ending was excellent and not what you expected 🙂

Disappointing, until.....
I was very disappointed with the conclusion until I listened to the very end! Very intriguing story, had me gripped throughout and just when I couldn't see what would happen next, it was expertly written. Love these books.

No. Just no.
This book is painfully slow, full of cliches and makes no sense whatsoever. For example, it is illegal to write an employee a bad reference. So that’s a massive plot hole. I also really disliked the main character. The only reason I listened up to where I did (a couple of hours) was because I was waiting for what the back blurb had advertised to happen. It hadn’t yet when I stopped listening, but I couldn’t take it anymore.

This looked like it could be good. But I’m wrong it’s not good it’s really silly. If she says how very lonely she feels. Please write better stories.

No Sleep
The narrator was extraordinarily good! She kept me wide awake every night! The story was excellent, so I have no hesitation in recommending this audio.
