"Die Eroberung von Byzanz" ist ein Teil von Stefan Zweigs "Sternstunden der Menschheit", eine Sammlung historischer Prosa-Miniaturen. Dieser Teil handelt von der Belagerung von Konstantinopel und dessen Fall. Durch eine geöffnete Pforte können die Osmanen eindringen und die Stadt erobern. Fortress-walled Saint Catherine's monastery on the Sinai Peninsula (Egypt) has been a pilgrimage site since its founding by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6th century. According to tradition, the monastery sits at the base of the mountain where Moses received the Tablets of the Law. "The Haunted Bookshop" is a so called "bibliomystery" (a mystery story set in the world of books) from 1919. It is the story of the eccentric owner of the Haunted Bookshop, Roger Mifflin, who some readers might remember from "Parnassus on Wheels". This second-hand, Brooklyn bookstore is "haunted by the ghosts of all great literature." It is set around the time of the end of World War I. A young man, Aubrey Gilbert, stops by the shop, trying to sell Mifflin advertising copy. He fails but is intrigued by the proprietor.

"Kathleen" is a 1920 novel by Christopher Morley. It tells the story of a group of eight Oxford undergrads who call themselves "The Scorpions." One day, they find a letter that a certain Kathleen wrote to Joe, and they build an idea of who she might be in their head, and are so intrigued, that they decide to go looking for her. Christopher Morley (1890-1957) was an American author, poet and journalist from Pennsylvania. His father was a mathematics professor and his mother a violinist.

"'It is no use!' she cried, at last, pushing back the mass of thick black hair falling over her white brow; 'I shall never be able to get India by heart, unless I can see the places. I wish papa would let us go reconnoitering amongst the ruined temples and other mysterious buildings; it is so annoying staying here day after day, never seeing anything outside the palace.

"The Man Who Would Be King" (1888) is inspired by the real-life actions of James Brook, a British soldier who made himself Rajah of Sarawak (Borneo). In this short story, Kipling tells of two crook characters, Daniel Dravot and Peachey Carnehan, through a third character, an Indian journalist, who is acquainted with the men. Their plan is simple: they will leave India and go to Kafiristan, a remote part of Afghanistan, and set themselves up as kings there by force.

"His Dog" is a story about Link Ferris who finds an injured dog on his way home one evening. He knows nothing about dogs, but nurses it back to health and the two form a bond such as only can be formed between human and canine. Unable to locate the collie's owner, Link christens his dog 'Chum', the latter becoming invaluable in tending to the daily needs of his meager farm.

"The Magnificent Ambersons" is the 1918 novel by Booth Tarkington which won the 1919 Pulitzer Prize. It is the second novel in "The Growth Trilogy," which includes "The Turmoil"(1915) and "The Midlander" (1923). In 1942, Orson Welles directed a film version of it, also titled "The Magnificent Ambersons" and starring Joseph Cotten, Dolores Costello, and Anne Baxter. The novel and trilogy traces the growth of the United States through the declining fortunes of three generations of the aristocratic Amberson family.

"The Lady of the Lake" (1810) is a narrative poem set in the vicinity of Loch Katrine, in the Trossach region of Scotland. It is made up of six cantos, each focusing on one day. There’s three main plots to this poem: a competition between three men for the love of one Ellen Douglas, a feud between James Douglas and King James V, and a war between lowland and highland Scots. This poem was incredibly influential at the time of its publication and inspired the Highland Revival movement.

At the bottom of the dried out Svartsjö lake (Black Lake) lies the Lövdala Parsonage with its stables and outhouses. There resides the good-hearted, widowed Pastor Lyselius and his beautiful daughter. One day, his new wife arrives and she turns out to be a wicked stepmother. She torments her servants and especially the parson's daughter, Maia Lisa. We follow Maia Lisa through torments and sufferings where she gets ever new and harder burdens to carry on her weak shoulders.

"Parnassus on Wheels" (1917) was Christopher Morley’s first published novel. It tells the story of Roger Mifflin, who sells his travelling book business to 39-year-old Helen McGill. The latter is tired of taking care of her ailing older brother Andrew, a businessman, farmer, and author. The novel is told from the perspective of Mrs McGill and was in part inspired by David Grayson’s novel "The Friendly Road." Morley wrote a sequel to this story called "The Haunted Bookshop.

Master Builder Halvard Solness is an ageing architect who has not achieved what he wanted, neither in art nor in love. He fears and bullies his juniors, and thinks he is going mad. His wife and mistress try to care for him as best they can, without themselves getting hurt in return. The situation is further fraught by the arrival of young and seductive Hilda Wangel, who also plays a part in Ibsen's previous drama "The Lady from the Sea.

Jahrhunderts dazu bei, eine Pariser Mordserie aufzuklären. Hauffs "Das kalte Herz" ist ein schaurig-schönes Märchen voll wundersamer Fabelwesen. "Heinrich von Ofterdingen" ist die Erzählung über einen Dichter, die niemals vollendet wurde und dazu einlädt, die Geschichte im Kopf weiterzuspinnen. Das Kunstmärchen "Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte" handelt von einem Mann, der seinen Schatten verkauft – nichtsahnend welche Folge dies hat.

Edward Malone is a young journalist at the "Daily Gazette", who is eager to impress his girlfriend Gladys. To do so, he requests a dangerous and complex task. Federica is a hard-working 23-year-old who takes up a job as the chauffeur of the wealthy businessman Humphrey Lestrode. Yet, as it turns out, she is not the only sister Humphrey has his eyes set on.

Some poems can really teach us something if we read carefully and understand the essence. This lyric poem by Kipling makes no difference. By reading it, a man can find some wise advice in it. The advice that most of us will find is how to deal with different situations in life. But is this all? Maybe there is a secret message which only few of us will understand.
