    Born into slavery in Beaufort, South Carolina, Smalls' early experiences shaped his understanding of the world and the injustices of slavery. His maritime skills, acquired as a teenager, played a crucial role in his daring escape during the Civil War. Smalls commandeered a Confederate ship, the Planter, and delivered it to the Union Navy, freeing himself, his crew, and their families. This act of bravery made him a Union hero and highlighted the capabilities of enslaved men.

    Post-war, Smalls continued to fight for civil rights, serving as a pilot for the Union Navy and later as a U.S. Congressman. His legacy of courage, leadership, and advocacy for equality remains a testament to his character and the enduring fight for freedom.
