あらすじ・解説

This story begins at an observatory in England where the narrator witnesses explosions on Mars. This event is followed by what is thought to be a meteor landing not far from the observatory. Once the narrator travels to the spot of the meteor landing he discovers it is actually a cylinder and the cylinder contains Martians. The story chronicles the Martian attacks throughout many parts of England, even devastating London and the narrator escapes with many chilling and near death adventures.

bad narrator

obviously a great story, but the narrator was monotone and hard to listen to. I'd suggest a different narration.

What a way to make a great story a snoozer.

A good story but the narrator will put you to sleep! So if you're looking for a great bedtime story to help you catch some z's, then listen to this version. I struggled to make it through, but I had to give up.

Look elsewhere

The story is a classic, and it deserved a better performance. In this case, anything would be better. Ridiculous monotone that sounds like a bad imitation of Joe Friday reading a cheap gumshoe detective novel. No attempt at differentiating characters. And could he have at least tried to learn pronunciation? 'Thames' does not have a long A. 'Vicar' does not have a long I. And I'm sure there were enough community names butchered to the point that diplomatic reasons between the US and the UK were significantly damaged.

Narration terrible.

All this crazy apocalyptic stuff happening in this book and the narrator reads it like he’s happy about it. Like he’s reading an advertisement for breakfast cereal.

Pronunciation

It would be nice if the narrator had an idea of how to pronounce certain words.

It did take the edge of the experience for me a little

Needs a British narrator

This desperately needs a British narrator. I wretched every time this one mispronounced the Thames.

Too bad

An these excellent story, imaginative and compelling. Unfortunately the story is spoiled by the narration. War of the Worlds happens to have a lot of place names in and around London. But the narrator is not native to the U.K. but to the US or Canada. Through no fault of his own, the narrator butcher the place name pronunciations. It’s painfully distracting to hear and spoils a great story.

great listen

great listen, but since it was written about 100 years ago the old English terms he uses can be a little difficult to follow.

Thrilling

So, sci-fi isn't my bag- never has been (I friggin hated Ender's Game!), but this book was on-sale, so I let it shoot it theoretical shot.
The verdict? I actually quite enjoyed it (which shocked the hell out of me!). I got really into it- I never thought I'd utter the phrase, "Suck it, Martians!", but here I find myself. The story was captivating, and held my interest- a difficult undertaking, I assure you.
I would recommend this book to others who are looking for a quick and exciting "read".

Very disappointed.

Considering the story line I was saddened to hear that the voice sounds computer generated and lacked feeling and character. Got as far as cheaper 4 and reasoned I was not listening to the story but was trying to decide if it was a real voice and couldn’t tell you what I had just heard. Not a good rendition at all.

Abysmal narrator<br />

Superb story rendered completely unlistenable by the narration.
Text to speech software or just plain awful narrator?

Great story, dubious reading

I love the War of the Worlds, it’s one of my favourite stories so no criticism there. The reader however is almost amusingly bad. His (US) accent is rather pleasant but he makes no attempts to get the pronunciation of place names or unfamiliar words correct. Thus the Thames is ‘Tames’, navvies become ‘navies’ and so on until it becomes rather distracting.

Find a different version!

Ahead of the upcoming BBC adaptation I wanted to read the original text again. On the positive side it is the full text and was less than a pound. And that is it for positives. A performance that just kept making me think that this is what Alexa would sound like if it had a male voice and the way lots of English words are horribly mangled by random American guesses at what they could be destroys any atmosphere that was created. I wouldn't listen to this version again.

Terrible delivery of a great book

This was my first experience of an audio book I did not get past page 1! The monotonous drone was awful! if this is what audio books are like I will stick to paper!

A great classic ruined by the delivery

A perfect example of a great classic story being ruined by poor delivery.
I cannot believe that this was a daily recommendation by Audible. At the time I purchased it I was unaware that there were other versions out there.
Well, lesson learned, always listen to the sample before buying.
The person reading this version has zero charisma or any story telling talent whatsoever. It is the first time that I have given up part way through an audio book.
The delivery is in a dull and monotonous monotone and his pronunciation of the place names is absolutely abysmal.
I am sure that even the least educated American would be able to pronounce the word “Thames” correctly.
Avoid this version and look for the one preformed by Matthew Lloyd Davies instead.

Amazing story - ahead of its time

After hearing Jeff Wayne's musical version and seeing the 1953 and 2005 films I was keen to read to book - the story was so much better than the film
The only bad thing was the American narrators UK place name pronunciations, it was quite distracting at times.
