あらすじ・解説

What would you do if you were sitting quietly in your living room when a mysterious couple suddenly appeared from out of nowhere, and then told you they were "ascended masters" who had come to reveal some shocking secrects of existence and teach you the miraculous power of advanced forgiveness? Would you call the cops? Call a psychiatrist? Call out for pizza?

When two such teachers appeared before Gary Renard in 1992, he chose to listen to them. (And ask a lot of questions.) The result is this startling audiobook: An extraordinary record of 17 mind-bending conversations that took place over nearly a decade, reorienting the author's life, and giving the world an uncompromising introduction to a spiritual teaching destined to change human history.

Opened my eyes to ACIM

I had tried to read A Course in Miracles years ago but simply could not understand the text and always put it down. This audio program helped open my eyes to what the book was trying to say and got me interested in reading it again.

The audio is well done, and while Gary doesn't have the professional public speaker type voice he does a good job of narrating.

If you were curious of a course in miracles or had tried to study the course and found it difficult to follow I recommend this audio as a good primer.

Thanks Gary, it got me started back on that path.

Disappearance of the Universe

I love this book because it is inspirational and life-altering. I must have listened to it 20 times, each time understanding and applying the principles set forth to a greater degree. It a good read and a tool for transformation.

Hmmm. It will get you to think

I enjoyed this. I'm still a little confused as far as the ending is concerned and not 100% sure I buy into the whole story (and I have a very open mind), but it will definetely get you thinking. Either Gary Renard is one of the great New Age con men of our time, or a great messenger. You decide.

Solid Content With Bad Form

I already read the text prior to purchasing the audio book, so my expectations as to the content were already set. The book reads quickly (took me about a day) and its message is solid. In contrast, the audio book (in my opinion) is rather loathsome to listen to. Something was certainly lost in the translation from print to audio.

As another reviewer mentioned, the person who plays the part of Arten has a radio announcer voice; while Pursah is played by Doreen Virtue, a familiar voice (if one listens to Hay House Radio). I think those two factors diminished the content considerably. They took away from the message more than they gave.

The only believable person in the audio book is Gary Renard himself. Then again, it was he who had the actual experience; not the other two.

However, as I considered it, I realized that this was one of those situations where I would be called upon to forgive. Could it have been done better? Without question it could have. Yet how many of us could have done it perfectly? Probably none.

Let this be a lesson to us all who seek the Truth: We screw up even the purest of messages with our own hands, try as we might to do otherwise. It is almost inevitable. Best to forgive it and take the content of what we're given; leaving the form behind.

If you're averse to reading a 150,000 word book, this audio format is just fine. The content is all there, just as it is in the book, and the audio quality is high and well recorded. But if you've heard Doreen and the other guy before, one can't help but be distracted by them.

I think the author should seriously consider redoing this book using real actors; perhaps ones with a heavy spiritual inclination, in order to capture the essence of not only the message, but of his overall experience.

Life Changing

Gary Renard's book "The Disappearance of the Universe" set me on a path that has been life changing in only a few short months. It is an increditable ride that takes you from disbelief to Truth. My outlook on life and God has changed forever.

Some interesting ideas; narrators are awful

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

no. Although many if the ideas were thought provoking, the narrators, especially Gary, were so bad it detracted from the listening experience.

Has The Disappearance of the Universe turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, but I would never buy another audible in which Gary was one of the narrators.

What aspect of the narrators’s performance would you have changed?

I would have had someone other than the author narrate the author's part. Gene sounded like a bad parody of a radio DJ. Doreen was pretty good.

Was The Disappearance of the Universe worth the listening time?

Barely. The content was somewhat interesting, but the narration was so bad, I didn't really enjoy the book.

Any additional comments?

I looked through other offerings authored by Gary Renard but found that he was also the narrator in all of them so I didn't purchase any.

Content vs. Form

The content of "The Disappearance of the Universe" includes some eye-opening and worthwhile concepts for students of New Age spirituality. It frankly acts as a sort of advertisement for and clarification of "A Course in Miracles," but its ideas are certainly available to anyone, regardless of their exposure , to the earlier work.

The audiobook, however, is a perfect example of What Not To Do. The author, whose voice is so nasal and sinusy as to border on the loathesome, has insisted on reading his own work. Another spiritual author, Doreen Virtue, reads the part of Persa, the female spiritual guide, while an obviously professional reader, with a slick, radio-type announcer voice, reads the words of Arten, the male spiritual guide, and makes them sound like an infomercial.

The mix is so bizarre as to make the content difficult to approach. Fortunately, the sections the author reads are very brief, and the more listenable voices of the other two readers constitute the majority of te work.

Don't listen with good earphones unless you want to know all about the sinus condition of the author. Sorry, Audible: this is one I wish I'd bought on paper and read with my eyes, 'cause my ears are annoyed.

Classical Advaita Vedanta in a New Age format

The audio of this book did not turn out to be as bad as some other reviews below suggest. Though it is improvable but is listenable. I am not a big believer in mediumship or angelic revelations but this work, even if it might be purely a fiction, seems to have been written with a lot of thought and imagination. It does have some trappings of New Age and that is why I reserve a bit of healthy skepticism.

What made me a bit wary was the claim of this book that Thomas was killed in India. This seems to be retelling of a popular myth as the contemporary biblical scholarship, both secular and religious, now discounts this story as apocryphal. The fellow mistaken from St. Thomas was actually Thomas of Cana , a Persian merchant who escaped to India with other Christian refugees in 4th century CE. I was wondering if Purusa was real St. Thomas whether she would have still made this claim about St.Thomas' death in India which is now known to be spurious, based on a mistaken identity.

Having said that there is a lot in this work that is thought provoking. It is basically retelling of classical Hindu philosophy of Advaita , or Non-dualism, in a New Age format.

For a more orthodox and time-worn reading of non-dualism philosophy the reader is advised to refer to the works of Adi Shankara, the 8th century Indian mystic who reconciled Buddhism and Hinduism. Another classical Hindu work that comes to mind, which contains the same exposition, is "Yoga Vashishtha". A more contemporary and Christianized, and yet somewhat conservative and orthodox, reading and practice of his philosophy is also available from Self-Realization Fellowship founded by Paramhamsa Yogananda, the author of Autobiography of a Yogi (available on audible). The present work refers back to Course on Miracles, a work I am not very familiar with but would definitely like to check out after listening to this work. On the whole, I recommend this book but with a little caution however.

Basically an Infomercial for A Course in Miracles

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. Poorly read. The subject was interesting, but the Readers were horrible. I might recommend the Hardcopy Book.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The 'Universe' concept was interesting.
Wisecracking Ascended Masters?

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The Author's voice was uninspiring.
The female Reader started out bad, you could hear her stumbling over commas, though she grew more proficient by the end of the book.
The male Reader didn't start out too bad, but was emoting like the announcer in a commercial by the end of the book.

Did The Disappearance of the Universe inspire you to do anything?

I'll probably listen to A Course in Miracles, so I guess this book did its job.
I wonder if I can return this Book to get the money to buy the one it was advertising.

Any additional comments?

If those two clowns are Ascended Masters, I think I'll take up Buddhism.

One of the greatest books ever written. It truly changed my life. I'd recommend it to anyone. It really is a book for everyone. If you're struggling to fully understand A Course in Miracles, then read this first.

Uncertain about this

The story seems to be that, a couple of cosmic celestial beings turned up at some dude's house, explained to him the historical inaccuracies in the Christian story, told him a bit about the importance of forgiveness, and then instructed him to do A Course in Miracles.

Some of this resonates, but I'm undecided about it's authenticity and usefulness.

The Course Revisited

Interesting read/listen and well worth taking in metaphorically rather than literally. Stories and narratives are never the truth in themselves but point to the truth - and this book is a great signpost!
People, me of course included, tend to make fixed interpretations of things we learn rather than keeping our minds flexible and open. This, in my ‘nobody’ viewpoint, is how religion hijacked spirituality and turned a simple message into cults with loyalty cards. I would like a version of the Course, similar to this book, done from an independent perspective rather than a Christian one. I was brought up a Christian but quite early on in my childhood at Sunday school had a strong sense that what was being taught was distorted (even if well intentioned). Let’s stop being divisive and embrace a spirituality that joins us all - we are one!

I couldn't switch it off!

Some of the most exciting material I heard so far. I am a student if A Course in Miracles and I haven't always completely understood each lesson. This audio has put the entire course into perspective and something has clicked! Loved the content, delivered with humility and humour. I shall be listening to this over and over as well as Gary's other titles.

An interesting take on Christianity

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Narrators voice is a bit robotic, although I do like the fact that it is the genuine author.

What did you like best about this story?

Gives you a taste of avenues you may want to pursue in finding out a more factual take on events with Christ, rather than just a 'bilble-ised' version.

Would you listen to another book narrated by the narrators?

Yes, if it had similar content on the same subject, although I would say that it could be narrated better.

Do you think The Disappearance of the Universe needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Yes, because it leaves unanswered questions, did he pursue that he may have been hallucinating. Did his wife every get to meet the same people who are central to his book. What were the 365 daily insight's of wisdom that are meant to help us on our way to god?

Any additional comments?

Essentially good subject matter, even interesting whether it was a manifestation of his mind rather than a visitation. Good have been presented a little better, author has a kind of robotic Stephen Hawkins ring to his voice which is a bit hard to listen to continually.
That being said, I did pretty much listen to it end-to-end in one day, so it wasn't impossible to listen to.

The greatest book since the Bible

This is the greatest book since the Bible, absolutely and without a doubt. The extraordinary experience that happened to Gary back in '92 has just got to be the most phenomenal personal awakening.

I won't give the game away, if you are reading this its because this is your calling to listen and be totally amazed!

I've been studying spirituality for 20 years and when I first heard this work I had not just one but many epiphanies! I has such a deep and power awakening with it that I also have the hard copy book of it too so that I can receive the information through as many ways as possible.

For me this answered every single question I've ever had! The author actually reads the main book himself which for me is the icing on the cake.

If you are searching - your search has ended and you've arrived. Prepare for your life to change in the most miraculous way.

i am familiar with acim principles but still found this odd. Gary spent a lot of time trying to be funny. At the end Persa (an angel of sorts) talks about how powerful America is; the most powerful force this planet has seen. very much an American thing to say. did not enjoy.

Worth Listening To

Was going to stop listening, but then thought, maybe my programming was automatically rejecting the information. I'm so glad I continued on, it makes sense and resonates with me.
