This book definitely beats my high school Spanish classes that made it feel like I was in kindergarten again. It has stories everyone can enjoy. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to improve their Italian!

Beautiful

Wow! I personally like this book. Normally, when learning a language, you have to go r through the grammar and work your way up in understanding a language. Well, this book has a different approach for beginners like me who has a strong inclination in learning Italian. I personally like how the book delivers stories (short stories to be exact) to beginners and take a different approach in introducing a language. The stories themselves were good and easy to understand. It is simple to use and simple to understand. In each short stories are vocabulary words that are defined for you. While this book doesn't teach a full grammar or syntax of the language, it does present and teaches the ability to listen and how each words are pronounced. I believe that beginners like will benefit a lot and for people who are trying to pronounce some words in Italian. Personally, I think that adding pictures to the short stories will help my understanding as I go through and use context clues to understand the story. While it's not the best, it does the job for beginners in improving their listening and skills. A must recommend.

Famous

From my perspective (someone who's never studied Italian before), I found this book to be interesting when it comes to learning short phrases and words. The glossary is conveniently right next to the stories. It’s also easy to track as the layout is in order of the keywords and phrases that are said within the story from start to finish. There are also mini multiple choice questions to keep me engaged in the book and to realize my own progression. The downside is I find myself looking through the glossary rather than the story itself as I am not familiar with the grammar or subjective words to connect the keywords to. Overall a great book to get into the Italian language for the price. I do feel the need to reach out and find an understanding of the basics first though.

Awesome

More twists and turns than a twisty thing. Jake brings to life the characters and situations making them thoroughly This book gives more insights into the complex mind of Sam Tay, his self doubts and insecurities, making him even easy to relate to. If this is your first Jake , firstly, where have you been and secondly, get out there and buy the back - you won't be disappointed

Awesome

Enjoyable Singapore tale. Inspector Tay investigates the murder of American diplomats, and gets drawn into plots and counter plots at the American Embassy. Tay is a great character: not a man of action, but cautious and nervous of making the wrong move. It's well written and gets over the neatness, oppression and heat of Singapore.

Lovely

Inspector Samuel Tay of the Crime Investigation Departed of the Singapore Police Force is a strange character. His weaknesses are presented to the reader on numerous occasions in the story that at times I wondered how he could have achieved the position that he held.

Nice

I know very little about Singapore, but this novel conjures up the atmosphere of the place brilliantly. I love the way Jake Needham gives digs about Thailand next door - you see a tiny glimpse of the author.

Nicely

I picked up this book after seeing the tag line 'Michael Connelly with steamed rice', being a big fan of Mr Connelly I was keen to discover a new author who had been likened to him.

Great

I initially chose this book because I have family in Singapore and am also addicted to crime novels of all kinds. It's a real page-turner, but literate and not so gory as to be repellent. The main character, Samuel Tay is a middle-aged man living alone who has an eye for a pretty woman and can't give up smoking. He reminds me a bit of books. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

A must buy

This method of learning works for me. I listen first in Italian and try and guess the story. Then I listen to the explanation. replaying again and again, I eventually get the meaning. I loved this.

Easy to understand!!

Always looking for new things to help me practice. As others said, it’s not really for absolute beginners. I am especially pleased with this book because there doesn’t seem to be much available for the intermediate level making THIS a great resource. I now have the audio version as well and that is VERY helpful. The reading is not too fast but still a challenge for the student.

Very Effective Book!!

As the other reviews have mentioned, this is a great book. Well formatted, great references for vocabulary but it definitely isn't a beginners book. It can help with getting the rhythm of Italian and repetition is the key to success

It very fun and useful to in this book

I was very happy to get hold of this book. Although I am not a beginner in Italian, I found it very fun and useful to in this book because it is not really an ABC of the language. What a great idea to provide at the end of each story a summary

Awesome Tune!

I like this book for several reasons. While I mentioned the fact that you do need an intermediate level of Italian to fully appreciate each story and understand the why's of the usage of verb conjugaison, and articles, each story is quite understandable and can be appreciated thanks to the fact that each story ends with a vocabulary list, a summary of the story in Italian

One of the best!!

I love this book with it's quaint, charming short stories. I love that there is a simplified version after the story in case you don't get the full gist, and that the condensed version is translated into English (a sort of belt and braces scenario where you can't go wrong!!)

Marvelous Tune!

I am a beginner when it comes to learning the Italian language and, whilst this book is not for the "raw" beginner, it is good when one has covered verb conjugations, prepositions and adjectives - the rest is just vocabulary - which is covered at the end of every short story.

Helpful

I was very happy to get hold of this book. Although I am not a beginner in Italian, I found it very fun and useful to . It is a fantastic way to learn and practice Italian. You need to have some basic knowledge in Italian to be able to the stories in this book because it is not really an ABC of the language. What a great idea to provide at the end of each story a summary of it in English! This helps the English-speaking comprehension in Italian. Even more useful is the vocabulary included for each story - a great way to learn new words and be reminded of those you a know but may have forgotten with time. I recommend this book to everyone and anyone who is learning Italian or knows it but wants to refresh vocabulary knowledge and comprehension. Five Stars!

Practical Guide!!

I like this book for several reasons. While I mentioned the fact that you do need an intermediate level of Italian to fully appreciate each story and understand the why's of the usage of verb conjugaison, and articles, each story is quite understandable and can be appreciated thanks to the fact that each story ends with a vocabulary list, a summary of the story in Italian and English and my favorite, a list of questions about the story. The author recommends that you use auxiliary aids such as an Italian learning book to fully appreciate the usage of verbs, articles, grammar and experience how they are being used in writing an Italian story. The author also recommends to take your time in order to fully learn what each story has to offer. And if you do it right there is a lot to learn from each story. I do recommend this very enjoyable book.

It's so.. American

I regret purchasing because the narrator just seemed to Americanise everything. I'm Australian with Italian heritage and this was a disappointment. The book goes on and on about places in Italy, and their historical facts - which by the way would be useful if it had an Italian translation, and for those of us that have visited Italy, this part was boring. I found myself waiting minimum 10 minutes of American English chit chat before literally skipping through it, only to realise the pronunciation of Italian words were a little too (yes you guessed it) Americanised. Over the top and obvious that the narrator was a native English speaker. I'll be purchasing the other similar book in hopes it cuts right to storytelling.. in Italian, that is.
